Measurement of typing speeds
Data entry speed is measured by manual input. The rate at which a computer user
submits the data electronically is mainly measured in words per minute (WPM). In
some instances, data entry speeds is measured in Keystrokes per hour (KPH). Data
entry speed is the common determiner on how one can be employed to do data entry
jobs. In the data entry business, speed and accuracy is the greatest asset that
a worker can possess. Data entry speed relates to the amount of work that you
can get done in a certain period of time, hence the amount of income.
Regardless of what payment mode you agree with the company you are working for,
data entry speeds will still play a major role in determining your earnings. For
instance, in transcription jobs, a data entry worker can be paid per word, per
page, per line or per page completed. However, there are companies who prefer to
pay by the transcript audio time. They may pay a certain amount of money per
minute of transcription, per hour or set a price for the whole recording. For
manual documents that need to be entered into the computer, the payment is often
set on the total number of words or a certain price is set for a certain number
of words (e.g. $1 for every 100 words entered). The faster the data entry worker
enters data into the computer the more work they can do hence the more they
earn.
Acceptable typing speeds
What speeds are acceptable in data entry? Acceptable data entry speeds that get
people hired for data entry must be between 9,000 and 12,000 KPH for numeric
character. However, for alphanumeric typing, the speeds acceptable are as low as
7,000 because additional characters and special quotes and characters slow down
typists when typing.
Speed testing
The only way to discover how fast one is typing is by undertaking typing tests.
There are many ways in which these tests can be taken including online, from
purchased and installed software. Most hiring agencies and outsourcing companies
are very conscious about typing speeds and invest in good methods that determine
how fast a data entry worker is in entering data. These data entry speed tests
are made of scripts of varying length and character contents. A typist is
required to transfer characters and words from a page into the computer program
that measures the typing speed.
Most jobs that require the worker to enter data into the computer of demand high
typing speeds. To be fast in data entry, practice and proper keyboard etiquette
are necessary.
